10 Beautiful Things, vol. 43
The sky is mentioned three times, which is appropriate
Good morning!
This is 10 Beautiful Things, a weekly missive about the search for beauty in ordinary life. Here you’ll find ten things I’ve found beautiful, online or off. I hope to share some beauty with you, and encourage you to find (and share!) some beautiful things of your own.
Two back-to-back hosting ventures that brought our house a lot of laughter and joy: first, after a long hiatus for break, we concluded our Lord of the Rings trilogy. We baked bread and our friends brought things to eat with the bread (PB&J, soup, charcuterie…). The room was a little misty eyed at the end. The next day, I hosted a smaller Galentine’s where we ate pasta for dinner and watched the 1985 Anne of Green Gables with chocolates and tea. We had so much fun! (Anne Shirley would have totally done an MLitt in Theology and Art.)
Saturday writing days at the Roundel.
I’ve been a little under the weather for a few days this past week, but I got to see the blue, unclouded sky for what felt like the first time in all of February while I convalesced, which brought me some joy!
Friends who tell you the truth when you need to hear it.
Connecting in person with a Substack friend in town this week!
Baby cotton candy clouds outside our flat.
A puzzle, lent by a friend, to do with Jake for a date night in. Jake also spontaneously decided to attempt an at-home Bloomin’ Onion, which was a success and actually better than Outback’s.
A little walk down to Castle Sands, where I found some sea glass, my favorite thing to collect.
These two covers currently on our bed – the white, a quilt I received as a Christmas gift from my mom in college, that I used as my bed quilt in every place I lived until I got married, and the William Morris duvet cover a gift from my grandmother this Christmas and the first nicer (not Target/Facebook Marketplaced) duvet cover we’ve owned in marriage. I’m enjoying the visual representation of the past and present side by side – and they make me think of my mom and grandmother!
The sun being out consistently again, which makes such a difference in my mood. I thought when I first moved here that I’d never see the sun from October to June, but Fife is actually one of the sunniest regions in the United Kingdom. It’s great to be back to our regularly scheduled programming. 😎
What’s something beautiful you found this week?

Tucking away the tip about sea glass at Castle Sands for when my mother-in-law visits. Anne would totally write a dissertation on gothic literature...or fairies and reenchantment...or the aesthetics of rural Canadian Presbyterianism...the possibilities are endless!
Feeling famous! Grateful for you!!
